New software will help officials keep track of over 11,000 south Louisiana residents who are transported to shelters in case of a hurricane this year.
The state Department of Social Services said the system will only apply to residents who are transported to state-run shelters, whose bed space makes up a fraction of the 93,000 spaces in shelters. Most shelters are run by parishes.
The software will allow DSS to keep information on each individual who is bused to a shelter, along with data about their relatives and pets. A demonstration on Friday showed that a driver's license scanned into the system generates a wrist band for each evacuee, plus a list of passengers for each bus.
